BODEGAS AVELINO VEGAS: The Spanish word “esperanza” means “hope”. Esperanza refers to positive thinking; positivism that has been rooted in the Vegas family DNA and passed on from generation to generation.
That positive mindset triggered Avelino Vegas, father of Fernando – current Director of the Avelino Vegas winery to kick-start what it was a risky project in the closed-up Spain of the 50’s: the foundation of a winery in a region where a white grape was the star. This fact provided a scarce prospective of growing in a time when the world’s thirst for wine was coloured red. Nevertheless, this visionary understood the market’s future shifts and got to turn a small familiar winery into a referent in Spain.
DO RUEDA: It was the first Denomination of Origin to be approved in the Region of Castilla y León, after years of hard work in order to earn acknowledgement and protection for its autochthonous grape variety: the Verdejo. This DO character is a combination of Verdejo grapes, continental weather and gravelly soils that stand 700 to 800 metres above sea-level within the basin of the Duero River.
Vineyards: 600 ha (1,480 acres) of prime vines in the heart of the D.O. Rueda located on a high plateau of the Duero river.
Elaboration & style: Fresh, crisp and complex white wine at a state of the art facility. Working with Rueda’s native white grape VERDEJO.
